Derek Crane is a former member of the Soundhouse’s Super Band, having served as solo chair and sectional leader during his time in the program. He has continued his career as a professional woodwind player.
He has performed with many different groups in a variety of settings, including the Utah Symphony, the Boise Symphony, Johnny Mathis, Utah Live’s Swing Orchestra, Roadside Ramblers, Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra, BYU Synthesis, Wind Symphony, Chamber Orchestra, Dixieland Band and Philharmonic, Fictionist, and many others, regularly on multiple woodwinds. At BYU, he has served as principle Bass Clarinet on two international tours and during off years; principle flute in the opera; Vice President of the Studio Orchestra; and received a number of Downbeat Awards and recognition for recordings and solos done with BYU Synthesis. He regularly records for films.
From year to year, Derek’s students can be seen as Sterling Scholar and members of All-State groups. A majority play multiple woodwinds. Continuing in the tradition of the masters in Utah, Derek teaches all saxophones, clarinets, bassoons, flutes and ethnic instruments to students ranging from the beginning to advanced levels, either as primary or secondary instruments.
